Interview!

A student at my former school Tribeca Flashpoint Academy recently reached out to me for an interview. I've decided to post it for everyone to see it!

Daniel Clayton Farnsworth
Is an audio engineer In Chicago, IL. His Recording and Mixing work includes such artists as Van Go, Hollus, Par Avion, and even some of his own work.

Before enrolling at Tribeca Flashpoint Academy (TFA), what were you doing?

-Before I was a student at Tribeca Flashpoint I was working my way through community college. I knew what I wanted to do, but I really had no way of furthering my education. I was enrolled at Harper Community college and I was working as a barista at starbucks part time. I had took a small course on recording through college, but I didn’t really learn much except for how to use a patch bay and how to hit record in Pro-Tools. I took other classes at school like classical guitar, music theory, music appreciation, french, speech, math, and general studies.

What major change or event influenced your decision to go to this school?

-The major change was when I begged my parents to help me change my life, I didn’t really have a goal at the time that was possible without an education or an internship. My mom looked up recording arts schools in chicago and Flashpoint popped up right away. I immediately sent for more information and took a tour. My parents were also convinced that this was where I needed to be.

After graduating from TFA how did your career change and do you feel the knowledge you gained plays any role in your success?

-After I graduated TFA I felt like I had a great deal of knowledge behind me. However the career portion didn’t happen as quickly as I’d expected. I did work as an intern at a local chicago studio, but I realized I had a lot of work ahead of me. I’d always be putting in the hours to learn the things that I needed to for the jobs I had. I was and always will be tied up in this wonderful world of Recording. It’s more of a love, then a career and thats why I keep pursuing it. I did get some work as a general stagehand for the last couple months of 2010 and I had a whole bunch of freelance remix/audio work in 2011. The things I learned in school definitely put me on the right track. If I hadn’t taken a lot of the business classes, I really wouldn’t have the etiquette that it takes to get clients and start up great business relationships.

Are you a member of any organizations? Do you think its important for engineer’s to be apart of any organizations?

-Unfortunately I’m not a member of any organizations. I think the organizations are important, but I really haven’t had a lot of time to settle down and join them. I think there is always a 50/50 balance between trading contacts between engineers or being in an organization. I want to join AES and I would like to be a part of some of the electronic music org’s out there, but Like I said it’s either time or money that I don’t have.

What advise do you have for me as a student and aspiring professional?

-My best advice for anyone entering this field is to always have an open mind and not be afraid to try anything new. Keep learning and honing your craft and you’ll find success in all the right places. If you have a dream then follow it, it may come slow or it may come quick, but if you want it bad enough, that dream will come true when you least expect it.

How do you keep up-to-date on equipment? Any favorite websites or magazines?

-I keep up to date on equipment by browsing forums, industry pages, and various websites. I also read the reviews in magazines and listen to samples. My favorite magazines are; Future Music, Music Tech, Tape-Op, Sound on Sound, Mixmag, Computer Music, and Electronic Musician. A little side information, I have kept every magazine I’ve ever bought/received in a collection in my room at home. I call them my “bibles” and I do go over them again and again. I have issues dating all the way back through 2005 when I was still a junior in high school.

In your words, where do you think the recording industry is going?

-I think that the industry is definitely taking some hard hits right now, but besides the issues of piracy and money, I think that people are finding new ways to market. With music the live show is where the income is and the record is a well put together representation of a performance/artist. I can’t put my finger on it, but I know that certain sites for buying music have sparked me to spend a little extra for hard to find(‘s) or better quality. Sure we’ve all gotten music for free, but it’s the usual top 40 that is selling anyways. The artists are doing different things to make an income and I’m ok with it, but I’d still rather own a vinyl record of anything then a digital file, it’s just that not everything is available on vinyl.

What is your process when mixing a song how do you attack it?

-when I am asked to mix a song, I’ll usually listen to a rough or unmixed track. I’ll listen for the parts that stick out to me and write down what I see myself doing with them. I’ll figure out the genre and I’ll ask how far my creativity is allowed to go. Sometimes you’ll be asked to be out of the box, while other times you’re asked for very specific things. If it’s rock I’ll usually start by nailing down the drums and getting them to sound great right away. I try not to mute things in and out of the mix or solo them. I’ll start by making sure rhythm and low end are in the pocket and go from there. I don’t have a specific set of steps, but I go with what sounds best and work my way up.

How do you deal with fragile musician egos when you are recording?

-Dealing with fragile Egos can be difficult cause sometimes it’s hard to tell someone that there performance was a note off or a bit sloppy. I think the best way to attack any sort of ego issue is to get to know the person. If you find out who they are and where they have worked before you’ll gain a lot more information on how to go about recording them. I’ve worked with some artists who thought I was over my head in the enthusiasm department, but I didn’t do my research and had the right attitude at the wrong session. Simply put, I didn’t do my research and I learned from my mistakes.

What was the last CD you purchased and why did you choose to not download the album?

-The last CD I purchased was a band I saw at Subterranean. They were called downers of the world unite. I couldn’t find them on the internet and the CD was at the merch table so I decided that I should get it.

What is listening to a live concert like for you? And a CD?

-Live concerts and CD’s are very different for me. I love both, but I try and keep them separate. Live concerts for me are all about energy and feeling in the moment. The passion and attitude in the room has to get through to me. If the band isn’t feeling it on stage, I’m not feeling it. Cd’s to me are like books, you can go over and over them again and again, but you’ll always find something new again and again. I love both, but I’d say I prefer to be a studio engineer making cd’s rather then a live engineer.

What was the first piece of recording gear you purchased and do you still have it?

-The first piece of recording gear I purchased was a yamaha USB mixer in 2005. I still have it, but I’m pretty sure the power portion/adapter no longer works. It opened new worlds when I got it cause I was able to finally recording my full set of drums and edit them using cubase. I was able to make my own recordings on my own and that was very empowering.

What is your favorite piece of gear?
-My favorite piece of gear I’ve ever worked with has to be any of the UREI compresser/limiters. They just sound amazing on everything. As far as software, I wouldn’t live another day without Ableton Live and my MacBook pro. I can make music anywhere with those two.

What is your go-to Mic when recording vocals? Why?
- I don’t have one. I choose based on the studio I’m working at and what I have to work with or the vocalists voice characteristics.

What inspires you creatively?

-I’m inspired by everything that surrounds me, from books, to life experiences, movies, and simple thoughts. Anything can be turned into a story, but how you execute that is all up to you.

Do you have a signature style?

- I’d like to think I have a few tricks up my sleeve.....

Updating.

I realize I am not the greatest at updating my blog, but I do come with great news about the year 2011 and what it has brought so Far. At this moment I'm currently listening to some sigur rós in the control room of my home studio on my new Alesis M1 active monitors. I picked up the pair for 100 bucks at the local sam ash and needless to say they are definitely starting to become the favorite for all of my engineering work. They are far more easy to dial in tones, plus they sound great for those nights when i'm forced to be quiet, but still want to listen to music/engineer. Now with the word engineering comes other duties. I'm expanding my repertoire and starting to move more and more into the Live realm so I can make some easy money/gain clients from shows. As well as general stagehand work and being a studio rat at the moment, i've decided that it's the time for me to really find my inner self and start writing those tunes that people feel. I'm experimenting more and more with live instruments as opposed to my usual approach of total electronica, but i've found a niché for the acoustic guitar and reverbrant vocals lately. I have posted some new things on my soundcloud and you are more then free to listen to them. A few friends of mine have constructed studios or are in the process and it's all looking wonderful from what i've seen. Soon many new artists and talents will be able to work within there budget, but with extremely talented engineers/producers. My goal is to make the best sounding records, not to make the highest profit. Money will come later, but let's focus on what we love here first. I have a notepad full of notes on bettering yourself everyday in the realm of career. It helps beyond belief and maybe i'll get around to posting these secrets. I guess the best secret, should be no secret. Know what you offer and why no one else has it. You have a supreme talent and soon you'll work with the right people. It's all on you to find those people. Sure things fall into your lap and you're blessed to work on great projects, but to truly go out there and hustle is all you. I say do it because you love it. Not for the money.

Improved Workflow.

Been real busy as of late. Doing minor improvements here at Cue=Play. I have been out and about on the DJ scene again. Working up some real floor fillers. Lot's of new stuff going on with me. Almost done with school and still searching for a job! In other news I now have an official online flashpoint reel. You can check the reel out at it has some great examples of my latest works, including a sample of "Transportation". Which i'm still waiting to release, but it will be out soon. More updates soon. Too much to do, not enough time to write!

Working Working Working

Well the title says it all doesn't it? I have been working on a whole bunch of stuff regardless if it has to do with school or not. I just got back from spring break and Feel only halfway accomplished. I have most of my online portfolio done, but I have to do some minuscule edits for it to work. I am starting work on another EP. I have the title track done, but now I need to come up with alternates and/or find remixers to rework the track. Starting work with a new band and still building up Cue=Play. Saving up for more preamps. More stuff to be revealed soon.

Panels

So. I haven't updated. This is really becoming a problem, but anyways. Still working on those lovely Par Avion Remixes. The Remix EP will be out in May. Just Finished building some acoustic panels for Cue=Play. It wasn't too bad and it was less then 200 dollars so I can't complain and it fixed most of my flutter echo problems. Currently taking mixing and mastering class at gravity studios. I'm already learning so many great new techniques. I'm looking to buy more outboard gear, however I am broke and I still need to get my money from some equipment I sold. I'm planning on making some new instrumental tracks soon. By the way you can check out some of my material from 2009-2010 etc. at
and here are pictures of the panels I built this week. The insulation is Owens Corning 703 and it is covered in Red Burlap. Even though my friend wanted me to cover them in Purple Duck cloth.

Almost 10

So it's almost 2010 and we are about to embark on a new decade. This one has been pretty solid though. Lot's of great music. Lot's of great life. Lot's of awesome people. Anyways. I hope it was a good holiday for everyone. I acquired some new pieces of kit. The first of which would be the Macintosh magic mouse! I also got a pop filter finally! Anyways the par avion remixes are going great. I've just finished the song "plastic" it's pretty cool stuff. I used the vocoder in live to do some different stuff. Been on a 2 week break from school, but i'm already ready to go back. Finishing out the last of the winter semester. Then in spring it's on to mixing and mastering with Doug McBride at nine in the morning! No real exciting updates, but I might be in Future Music magazine!
Till next year,

From The Trenches

So here I am yet again at 4AM. It's a blistering 9.7 degrees outside! Anyways it is now officially go time. I finally received my par avion master pro-tools sessions and have begun the editing process and brainstorming. In other recording news......I've started work on a new project with my former band mate Tony Weirig. We've decided to cut a 5 song demo/EP of some music. The reason I say demo is because i don't have enough inputs to mic up my drumset(SHAME). However I will be programming some sampled drums to make it somewhat human. I will also be playing every instrument except vocals, that is Tony's job. Recorded the first song today using nothing but Ableton Live and my ADA MP1 tube pre-amp. Sounds pretty amazing if i do say so myself. Well thats all for now, but I'm sure i'll have more news by the end of the weekend! See ya!

TIME FOR AN UPDATE

So, i really need to stop making absences on this wonderful blog. I've been quite busy though. I estimate that I write at least 4 tracks in Ableton a week so that takes up quite a bit of time and then i'm always at school. However, I thought I should update the world on what exactly Daniel Clayton Farnsworth is up to. Let me tell you. After black friday I made some extensive changes to Cue=Play studios. I bought a DBX 166XL compressor and then yesterday I bought a patchbay. I finally have some outboard gear pumping in my studio instead of always relying on Plug-in's. I even have my microkorg patched up so I can get some great synth sounds going for my newer tracks. My next goal for Cue=Play is to improve the room acoustics by installing better treatment. Sure a bunch of heavy rugs and knowing your room get's you somewhere, but i'm trying to find an even better alternative. I did just by Auralex Mo Pad's though and you can hear things way different right off the bat. I realized that Dead To Fall's Recordings just do not have a ton of low end, especially below 100 hz. Anyways, Thats what is going on here. Still waiting for master tracks from Par Avion and doing even more wonderful work at Gravity Studios in Wicker Park. Been listening to a lot of Calvin Harris and Miike Snow. Both are Fantastic. Also enjoying Imogen Heap at the moment. More updates soon.

Oh yes

Well. It's been a little while and for those of you waiting for the update here we are. I have put together cue=play studios finally. Next purchase is a Alesis 3630 compressor. It's got that classic french house sound which i've been wanting for a while anyways. Also on my purchase list is a Mackie Big knob. Not Super necessary at the moment, but i want it. Still waiting for Par Avion Master Tracks which are in the mail. Remixes will be coming soon. They're also making an entire new album and..........I'm going to engineer the drum recordings! Woo! Phil's kit is awesome so i'm excited. Endings is out on tuesday! Get it! Here are some pictures of Cue=Play studio.

More Waiting.

I am still waiting on master pro tools sessions from Phil from Par Avion, but i have been working on some new production tracks....even though i haven't even released "Endings". Which is coming out December 1rst. If you want a copy or know someone that does I can get it to you in person or by mail. If worse comes to worse i can give a digital copy, but i really enjoy the artwork that i have for it. So long story short, working on par avion remixes, going to school everyday, finishing up press/cd production, getting ready for thanksgiving, and just keeping audio in my blood all the time. P.S. heres the newer album cover for endings minus the red typing error because my name apparently isn't an English word in the dictionary.
Cheers,
Daniel Clayton Farnsworth

News News.

So i found out last night that Par Avion is putting out a remix album and a B-sides album. I'm going to be doing some of the remixes. SO EXCITED! Par Avion is a fantastic band and they put on a great show. In other news my band Yes, Destroyer played our last ever show last night. It was a good show and I thank all the people that came out and supported us for the half hour or so that we played. I will say that there was a lot of guitar feedback and sloppy playing on my part, but it was enjoyable. I'm still looking for more bands to record now that I have a lot more time to devote to Recording and mixing. Anyways I'm going to enjoy the weekend and you should to. www.myspace.com/paravion

Just finished studio recording 3 at Gravity Studios with Doug McBride. One of my favorite teachers/classes EVER! A group project we did involved a chicago band Hollus. Session was good. If you'd like to hear my mix I can email it to you. In other news I finally finished my endings EP it's ready artwork and all, start ordering now! Well i'm going to catch some sleep so i'll be back on here soon.

Spring Break!

Enjoying Spring Break. About to break some big news to people. I have begun work on my new album entitled Book.Record.Ride. It's mainly going to be Ambient Electronic work, but i'm sure there will be elements like guitars and Dance music involved. Lyrics have been coming pretty easy for it too. I think all the books i've been reading have helped a lot with writing in general. One song I wrote for the album deals with a subject in the book dead eye dick by Kurt Vonnegut. Anyways go check out my music myspace if you haven't. My artist name on there is Me!Dan!Sing. The newest song on there is Marble Arch. This is an early preview of Book.Record.Ride. Enjoy! www.myspace.com/me!dan!sing I'm currently listening to Van She. Great album. See you later!
